What is Plagiarism Detector?

1. Application Overview:

Plagiarism Detector is a Windows standalone application to check sets of documents (*.txt, *.doc, *.rtf - supported file types) against Google main web database. The main idea of the application is that it sends hundreds of requests* to Google, taking as its input the analyzed document text body that is split into search strings.

Plagiarism Detector - has a number of unique features that make it an ideal solution for automated plagiarism detection:

  1. It produces immediate results in the form of reports. There is no need to wait as the analysis is done in minutes.
  2. Multiple documents support. You may add an unlimited number of documents to the check queue.
  3. This is so far THE ONLY application that checks Microsoft Powerpoint Presentations against google.
  4. Different filetypes support: .doc, .ppt, .pdf, .txt, .rtf and different html based ones.
  5. HTTP Proxy support - if You are behind a router - this is so far the only software application to run correctly.
  6. Visually stunning Alive Reports. These are JavaScript enabled HTML reports. Read more about Alive Reports.
  7. Windows Vista 100% compliant.
  8. Google CAPTCHA [more about CAPTCHA] automation. This is the only application to automate Google overload defense mechanism - when your search queue exceeds 1000 requests - Google triggers CAPTCHA sequence to protect itself from automated queries.
  9. Easy-to-use interface. Step by step project creation wizard. We tried to keep the application interface as simple as possible to allow effortless interaction with the application core.
  10. To freely use Plagiarism Detector you need to purchase it only once. No recurrent subscription.

* - the number of requests sent per second is determined by the internet connection speed.

2. What kind of solution Plagiarism Detector? What problems does it solve?

Plagiarism Detector is a groundbreaking digital copy-paste killer. Its main task and purpose is automated detection of digital plagiarism that originated from the world wide web. It was designed to use the biggest digital publicly open database in the world - that is Google. As it is mentioned on the home page of our site - every day the amount of information is growing - thousands of terabytes, even more... The internet is the global source of information and its informational power is so obvious that it does not require to be proved. Unfortunately, like any powerful thing, the information over the web has its darker side as well. But it is not less powerful in any manner!

Many people know this obvious truth, even children, that are often much more technologically smart than adults. The reason for this is not the problematic side - psychology gives definite answers to this issue. But the problem reveals itself when a person facing the alternative of information production - writing an essay, creating a report, writing a thesis, creating an article etc. has to choose between the two ways to follow:

  1. Create their own truly creative work.
  2. Use available sources in the internet. Copy from one source, and call it his "own" work.
  My personal experience:

I have been working as a teacher, for many years and I was constantly facing the same problem year after year - lots of students papers. Working as a teacher reading students' essays you may find yourself thinking: "Oh, I've seen this somewhere... In some book I guess... But where?" The most unpleasant thing for me under such conditions was that I couldn't’t tell a student that this passage does not belong to him - I had nothing to put forward except for my own suspicions. This situation got worse when I was working in a correspondence school - the number of "creative" essays doubled! And the whole amount of work to be done - checking the students' papers for hours and understanding perfectly well that their internet origin is absolutely clear made me think about this problem again and again.

The first obvious solution I've found in the Internet was to perform "Google testing" - that is to submit several sentences to this Internet search engine and get the results! This was a solution! It had produced effective results - I have detected that 3-4 papers out of 30 were internet based. But the process of manually submitting the papers can really make you crazy! Imagine that you have 4 groups of students about 25-40 people each!

The idea to automate "Google test" came to my mind several months later. The whole year I had been working with my colleagues on the project under the codename Plagiarism Detector. And here is the result - you may automatically submit unlimited number of electronic documents to the application and in several minutes get the same number of most detailed reports!

The power that makes the Internet the best place to harvest information is data automation. The same weapon to effectively fight this automatically compiled information is to use the same degree of automation for its detection! That is automating "Google test" makes academic copy-paste absolutely useless.

The last thing I would like to say - just try it!

3. Development History.

There exist several plagiarism detectors over the web - one of the biggest being "Turn it in". "Turn it in" is the biggest company on the market - but recently our University rejected its service - due to the legal issues that become visible.

"Turn it in" has being sued in legal court for students' Copyright Violations - for more details see:

  1. www.washingtonpost.com - McLean Students Sue Anti-Cheating Service
  2. IT: Instructional Technology - Turnitin Sued
  3. www.scottfeldstein.net blog - Turnitin Sued for Copyright Infringement
  4. Anti-plagiarism Site Turnitin Sued For Copyright Violation
  5. High schoolers turn in plagiarism screeners for copyright infringement
  6. Google search on the problem

Our University faced a necessity of an alternative, legally correct, tolerant solution.

The critical issues that brought "Turn it in" to scandal are pretty obvious:

  1. Turnitin violates student privacy and intellectual property rights, especially when archiving student papers without students' knowledge or permission;
  2. Turnitin profits from students' work without paying royalties;
  3. Turnitin creates an adversarial relationship between teachers and students because it fosters an atmosphere of distrust and renders students "guilty-until-proven-innocent";
  4. Turnitin distributes copies of students' papers to third parties, which destroys the future marketability of students' intellectual property.

Criticism source: http://en.wikipedia.org

We decided to create a product that will overcome all the above points. And Plagiarism Detector IS THE SOLUTION!

Using Plagiarism Detector you will never face any of the above mentioned problems because:

  1. There is no STUDENTS' WORKS DATABASE. Students' works are verified only against the on-line publicly accessible sources.
  2. By the product's nature our company does not gain ANY profit from students' works.
  3. Our application does not provide any automated grade, defining the GUILT of a student. The grading responsibility is separated from the application.
  4. By its nature, the application does not distribute the verified material to 3rd parties.
